Homeworld 2 Soundtrack

The Homeworld 2 soundtrack is not distributed by Sierra, but I wanted the music, so I asked someone to teach me how to extract the soundtrack from the game files. Here’s how I did it:

When you install Homeworld 2, there is a file called “Music.big” in the “Data” folder. I used Finalbig to extract all the files. Every “.fda” file is an audio file. I renamed the “.fda” files to “.aifr” and opened them in Winamp with the Relic AIF plugin. Then I used the Filewriter output plugin, set it to output to mp3 with the LAME mp3 encoder, and played through all the “.aifr” files (which caused Filewriter to make MP3 files from everything that was played). Then I just renamed my MP3s how I wanted and presto! - I have the Homeworld 2 Soundtrack!

It’s pretty awesome.

  1. I noticed on the Hacking Netflix site that you used Peerflix for a while. I’m writing a story about the service. Would you be up for chatting about your experience.

    Thanks.

  3. I’ve downloaded 4 different and recent versions of FinalBIG now in an attempt to extract the files as suggested. But everytime I try to extract the Music.Bigf file in the Data folder, FinalBIG either crashes or I get an out of memory error message. I find it hard to believe I’m simply out of memory seeing as how I have 768MB of RAM (650+ of which my Windows Task Manager claims are free when I run the program). Seeing as how the file is approx. 270MB I can understand the time delay I get while it attempts to extract it but I can’t seem to get it to finish without crashing. I am running Windows XP, using FinalBIG .36 on a 2.4Ghz DELL. Any suggestions as to where I might be going wrong?

    Thanks!

  4. Hey, I have been trying to crack the “Music.big” file to get the HW2 soundtracks. I dont have any experience with changing file formats and digging up files like that, but i used the programs and plugins that you posted but cant seem to get it to work. When trying to view the files in the “Music.big” file it says that the file is “locked” and no subfiles show up on FinalBig. What am i doing wrong???

  7. Sorry guys! I just followed the instructions word-for-word, step-by-step and it worked for me. If I actually had any clue what I was doing, I might be able to help you or elaborate on the instructions, but I guess I just got lucky.
